Palfy
16 hours ago, StatesideToffee14 said: That's a false equivalency. The Olympic basketball tournament hasn't used exclusively amateur players since the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. And the gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world in international basketball has been shrinking more and more, even with the entirely NBA roster of players. They'll still likely win the gold medal in this tournament but I wouldn't be shocked if teams like Germany or the hosts France gave them a challenge once they got to knockout rounds. Neither has tennis used exclusively amateur players since 1988 the last time to do so was 1924, and after those games was dropped from the tournament until the 1988 games. I fail to see how you find it unfair that Nadal and Alcaraz are playing together but don’t find it unfair that USA basketball team is full of the most talented and highest paid players in the world. I won't dispute that the U.S. hoops team is the best team in the world right now. But again, the talent gap between them and the rest of the world is not as much as it was even a decade ago. Heck, they beat a Serbia team yesterday that has a 3-time NBA MVP on their roster and a couple others that are regularly playing in the NBA. Brian Hooper (two time Olympic pole vaulter and "Superstars" TV prog legend) was a school sports coach and led the sessions. Can't watch it though, the ridiculous endless high fiving and congratulation after every singly point, won or lost, winds me up. Get an ace served against you? Go round the whole team saying well played...fucking stupid. Exception is the women's beach version, something about that makes it watchable...can't quite put my finger on what (without getting arrested). MikeO
Bloody incredible two golds this morning; Alex Yee looking like he might lose the silver in the triathlon suddenly runs down the leader in the final 200m, then the women's quad sculls pip Netherlands on the line to win...they only led for one stroke in the whole race, but it was the last one! It wasn’t Steve, but unfortunately mate times don’t always change for the better and the spirit of the Olympics we are old enough to remember have long gone. It’s a huge business now worth millions, but to give the Olympics committee their due the arena’s aren’t covered in advertising boards, if you watch the swimming the only sign of advertising is Omega underneath the starting blocks, probably because it’s their technology responsible for the times, I wonder when they give into the millions more they could make if they opened up the advertising streams. Same with the Euros. Cause if I'm remembering correctly, there were still attendance limitations in '21 yes?

Dublin had to drop itself from consideration since they couldn't give assurances that fans could be in the stands. Budapest was the only one that had 100% capacity. Other venues could only get 25-45% of capacity.
