Louis
First, it was Lukaku and now Naismith. I don't understand why he doesn't replace the players at the first sign of concussion, instead he leaves them on to play. I find it all the more surprising because he apparently has a degree in physiotherapy. In November he said: "My view is that I don't think it should be a manager's decision whether you take a player off or not. If there is a strong view from the medical side that when a player gets concussed he should come off, I think we should look into it and make it a rule." http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/everton-boss-roberto-martinez-calls-2685937

thoward18
If the guys specifically trained and paid to evaluate medical issues tells him that a player is good to go, then why WOULDN'T he leave that guy in. This is an issue with medics. Not coaching.
Lowensda
Naismith should not have continued in my opinion. Anyone suffering from head trauma must be taken off, it was ridiculous to keep him on! Miguel- it's a forum you belter, it's made for people to discuss topics, this is one of them. Lukaku never got concussed, he was the player who gave Loris concussion. Naismiths didn't look like concussion to me, a bit of a knock and he was groggy. He subbed him as soon as he indicated he hadn't recovered. nutmegwolf203, MC11 and Matt 2

We will check him over the next 24 hours as he had a bit of delayed concussion with the knock," said the Spaniard. "He was okay and then all of a sudden he became dizzy and he couldn't remember what was happening and we couldn't take any risks. Ant1979
Not every blow to the head results in concussion. I can only assume in both cases Martinez didn't receive an opinion of concussion from his medical staff? He certainly wouldn't overrule a medical opinion and keep a player on against their advice. He's a qualified physio but he's not a doctor Edited February 17, 2014 by Ant1979

Louis
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28656263 The Premier League is to introduce new rules on how to deal with head injuries from the start of the 2014-15 season. A player suffering a head injury must now leave the pitch and the club doctor must decide if a player is capable of continuing, not the team management. Home teams also have to have a third "tunnel" doctor on match-days.
Toffee_in_LA
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28656263 It's an improvement, but even club doctors may have the incentive of allowing the player to return on the pitch if say it's an important game or face dismissal. I much prefer the idea of having a 3rd part doctor sanctioned by the league. I know how dangerous concussions can be having seen a couple of teammates completely laid out playing American football in high school. They are not to be messed with and and are to be taken very seriously. Matt
Ben
It's interesting to see how various leagues around the world are creating rules for player safety regarding head injuries...this has become a major issue in the states with the NFL. The NFL also has the test administered by the team's own trainer.
msloan78
In the Australian NRL comp, they have to complete a cognitive test at the start of the season. If they suffer a head injury, they have to go and resist the test on the side line. Get less than your preseason score, and you can't go back into the game. They are then tested again, and are not allowed back on duty until they meet that initial score. Works pretty well, but it can open to manipulation, eg. Scoring deliberately poorly in your preseason test. There is a similar protocol for RL in the UK, but I don't think it includes the sideline screening. msloan78
On the back of this, there have been a few guys who have had to retire off the back of repeated concussions and potential permanent damage.
