MC11
This is not a knee jerk but an assessment on tonight's performance. I don't think that performance has done him any favours in terms of a starting place for the World Cup. Everyone has bad days at the office but I'm sorry that was shambolic. I'm all for Jagielka he is a great player, but he needs pace around him. Without the pace he looks like a headless chicken. I mean the fourth goal, come on that was a primary school boy error. It's just not good enough from a captain and full international. Tonight is not the first time I've seen Jags tore a new one at Anfield either. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks but we can't play that back four again. It was so vulnerable it was awful to watch.
Steve_E
Honestly, I think that back four is gonna be fine against most other teams in the league. markjazzbassist
MC11
Counter attacking teams will rip that back four to threads and it will continue to expose a Jagielka
Romey 1878
I'm not even sure Distin being there would have helped tonight. Not based on his last performance for us and the fact he'd have been unfit as well. A lack of depth is absolutely killing us at the minute and it could mean we do end up finishing in mid-table mediocrity at the end of the season. Quinn31
Jagielka is a good defender. I don't think he was at 100% last night given he went off early against Stevenage. Add to that he faced probably the paciest counter attack in England tonight. He still had a 'mare, but I think this will be a blip, an outlier, the abnormal... Shame it happened in the derby, though. Lowensda
Problem we have now is teams will believe we're vulnerable and probably attack even more so.
Romey 1878
Problem we have now is teams will believe we're vulnerable and probably attack even more so. I know we've kept plenty of clean sheets this season but I've said all season pretty much that I don't feel confident in our defence, it does not look solid, and a mauling like tonight has not surprised me,
Guest blueboy122
I think that the mauling tonight has been coming. Like Romey said I also had the feeling that we just weren't solid at the back and find it hard to believe that we have conceded such a small number of goals. Jags is a classy player no doubt and a great captain it was just a bad day at the office. Am sure the players will be as sick as us if not sicker. bluenosetoffee
Jags had a poor game I agree, but he did make some important tackles when needed. I also agree that he needs the pace around him like Distin and Coleman. He had a bad day but I am sure he will bounce back against Villa. duncanmckenzieismagic
He made a mistake but is still comfortably the best CB at the club so its not really an issue for me Matt
MC11
Personally I think we are much stronger with Distin there. Whoever he partners we look solid. Same can't be said for Jagielka.

Hafnia
Hopefully being demoted below smalling and Jones will give him a kick up the arse that he needs.
markjazzbassist
He's back. Derby goal and a solid performance against an attacking team. Let's hope Phil played like that the rest of the campaign. He and stones looked good together.
Oztoffee
Finally back to something like his old self. I like it.
Lowensda
Only just. He needed that performance though, he was one who shouldn't have been near the starting 11 in recent weeks. That goal alone should give him confidence if anything.
BlueBlood81
Loved the way he celebrated his goal. Didn't go mad but looked like a weight had been lifted. Bobby's reaction was priceless! Edited September 29, 2014 by BlueBlood81

djsunyc
i have to give jags some props. he looked really old the first few matches but he's really turned it around in the past few.
markjazzbassist
Yes he has. World Cup hangover maybe. He's back to the jags of old. Once stones gets back that defense will be rock solid again.

Cornish Steve
So who's his first-choice partner in defence while Stones is out? My vote is Alcaraz for the moment.
markjazzbassist
I vote antolin as well. He is well assured on the ball and passes really well.
Bailey
I'd like to see him sustain this form for at least half a dozen games before saying he is back to his best.
Matt
why do people have a downer on jags he's been our best defender for years.because for 12 months he's either benn injured or crap. I'm with Bailey here, he needs to continue this run of form before we can say he's back. On the right track though
MC11
So who's his first-choice partner in defence while Stones is out? My vote is Alcaraz for the moment. The problem with Alcaraz is his lack of pace. He can get away with it in 90% of the games but in the odd one or two he'll get exposed. Distin should play. Bailey
why do people have a downer on jags he's been our best defender for years. He wasnt last year or the year before that. Like any player who has been out of form, one game doesnt mean they are back at their best. Likewise one bad game doesnt mean they are out of form either although you would think otherwise on here sometimes! Matt

Distin has been reliable for years, even if he does make big mistakes. But I think Alcaraz reads the game better so it's a matter of who we play against I guess
