Dalziel Kane
Big news back home as the Eastern seaboard of the United States is on the verge of what could be 'the storm of a lifetime' Hurricane Sandy is imminent and it's looking like it could be the worst to hit the country in centuries. Anyone and everyone from North Carolina up to Massachusetts and beyond will be effected, and a slight concern as we have relatives in Rhode Island. Even the presidential elections have been put on hold of all things. This promises to be one major event and you can only hope there will be a limitation on casualties. The damage cost could well be astronomical but we still await the full impact. One can only hope the conditions are not so severe as predicted, but it's going to be a rough ride for all people effected. Incidentally this is around the 25th anniversary of when the United Kingdom suffered a similar catastrophe as a freak weather condition hit southern england in October 1987 (some Idiot said, there was no need for concern, just a few strong winds) but this one looks like putting that event into perspective. http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2012/10/29/hurricane-sandy-east-coast-frankenstorm/1666105/
Louis
Over 60 people have already been killed by it in the Caribbean region. I've just seen Obama's address telling people to listen to their local state.. it felt like watching a movie.

Kohen
I was in New York last year when Hurricane Irene was going on, they were warning us all day about it, stock up on food and such. We obviously did the quintessentially British thing of making sure we had enough beer for the night. As it happens, it didn't last the night and at around 9 when the storm was due we went in search of a Pub - was just a bit of wind and rain! However, Looks as if they may be in for a bit more wind and rain this year.

Avinalaff
Why call it Sandy if it's so bad ? Why not call it Hurricane Animal, or Hurricane Bad Ass ? Sandy ?
GoodisonRoad
I think it goes in alphabetical and sex order, so the last one would have been a boys name beginning with R and they alternate like that...I think? Sure I heard that somewhere
Dalziel Kane
It's how they categorize them as. Wouldn't be no sense in calling each hurricane A, B, C and so on or numerical order so they give them names. Makes a certain amount of sense, such as the big one that hit Florida in 1992 was 'Andrew' There was no such instance for the strong winds that hit Southern England in 1987 as it was not a hurricane, merely some strong winds hitherto unseen in the United Kingdom. Some exaggerations were made at the time although extensive damage was caused and a small number of casualties, but not a hurricane in the actual sense. Here's an update on the issue back home as people inspect the damage done etc. For those areas effected the worst is over. It has to be a relief. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/10/30/new-york-city-sandy-flooding/1668331/
