Dalziel Kane
Marcus Bent - short lived if unmemorable attacking unit of recent years - 35 Years Old Today On this day - a better day for results 2001 - a 2 - 2 draw with Sunderland in the league at home. Michael Ball and Idan Tal on target 1984 - The FA cup final and a 2 - 0 win over Watford. Gray and Sharp on target and Kendalls first trophy as club manager, which was a prelude to the glory of subsequent years under his management 1977 - a 2 - 0 win over Sunderland in the first division at home. Robert Latchford and Bruce Rioch on target
Zoo
Can't believe that Marcus Bent is 35... one of those strikers that was full of promise but never seemed to deliver on the big stage .
Dalziel Kane
He did well at Ipswich and formed a decent partnership with Darren (no relation) Bent, although in hindsight, we really should have brought in the other, as he was a genuine quality goalscorer, but in the end he went to Charlton Athletic ?, while M Bent was simply nowhere near the same caliber of player, and great moments, were, few and far between. Would liked to have seen Bent junior here, as he's always been a consistent and reliable center forward.

Both of them ended up playing for Charlton I think but yeah, had we been given our time again we should really have gone for Darren.
Louis
I think this may have been mentioned in Joe Royle's book, he said he offered Darren Bent to Everton when he was at Ipswich and Everton passed on him.
Dalziel Kane
Damn ridiculous decision in retrospect if the club decided to go with Marcus Bent instead of the other. D Bent was one of the best strikers in the country at time of transfer and that was with a championship club, and it would have been a great acquisition if we could have brought him in. That was stupid. In any event, no Birthdays today But on this day 1989 - it only went ahead in the end as it was an all-Merseyside final, but a 2 - 3 loss to Liverpool in the FA cup Final, After Extra Time. Pitch invasions when McCall scores at the very end of normal time and with a great effort in extra time but Aldridge and big nose Rush win the day for them, on a poignant occasion for everyone involved 1995 - The last (actual) trophy the club ever won, with a 1 - 0 win over Manchester United and Rideout with the only goal. Probably the one disappointment of the day, not making enough of the after-match celebrations and an early night. Still got the recording of the day on VHS somewhere
Dalziel Kane
Howard Kendall - some say he was best manager, I think maybe Catterick had a better case, all round fine club servant as player and manager - 67 Years Old Today 2011 - a 1 - 0 home win over Chelsea in the league. Jermaine Beckford got the only goal that day
Dalziel Kane
Not much to add today and running out of dates fast for the seasons, but 1985 - Paul Wilkinson scores the only goal in a 1 - 0 home win over Liverpool, that means a home and away success after the Anfield win in October 1984. Over 50,000 were attendance to witness this fine achievement in our greatest season. No birthdays for today unfortunately
Dalziel Kane
Duncan Mckenzie - short lived but memorable attacking unit of the Gordon Lee tenure, sometimes attracting more attention for feats outside of Goodison Park, some say club legend - can't quite buy into that, but still a memorable figure - 62 Years Today Stuart McCall - pocket dynamo flame haired midfield unit of the Harvey tenure who will be most remembered for his contribution at the 1989 FA Cup Final, and was still actively playing until recent years - 49 Years Old Today On This Day 1938 - a 0 - 1 loss (after extra time) to Glasgow Celtic (at Ibrox stadium) in the Empire Exhibition Trophy Final Tie (an anglo-scots short lived tournament) must have been worthwhile as 83,000 were in attendance that day

Jermaine Beckford got the only goal that day Mcintosh was also a successful manager, especially as he took us out of Div 2 on top of his other titles. I'd put Moyes up there also despite not winning much.
Dalziel Kane
Our finest club side I believe was between 1967-71, and Catterick was manager for that, Kendall did well, but did himself no favors with a second (and disastrous) third return. McIntosh will be too premature for most to remember and while bringing the iconic Dean in, and all that it entailed, did see the club suffer a relegation so that's a black mark for him. Moyes has done well, say it every time, but not winning much ? He hasn't won anything, at least at Everton, and he had enough time to have produced something.. Maybe he did take Preston North End to a minor honor but what's the benefit for us when he leaves without nothing. Catterick will always be best manager for me, although most won't remember much further back than that.

Dalziel Kane
'Mitch' Ward - late 1990s Howard Kendall / Walter Smith midfield unit that really didn't generate much interest but still gave three years of service and worthy of inclusion - 42 Years of age Today Brian McBride - sometimes interesting US international who was a short lived success and went on to better things with Fulham and hard working individual who was still recently playing at lower league level - 41 Years Old Today No significant matches on this day in past records incidentally
Dalziel Kane
A few birthdays but at least one significant name that warrants a mention. Robert Howarth - defensive unit that was regularly featured at the tail end of the 19th century - would have been 148 years old today Michael Walsh - short lived early purchase of the Kendall era but missed out on the golden harvest of the 1984-87 years - 57 years old today Peter Reid - iconic midfield unit of Kendall / Harvey, not quite of legendary status, and responsible for the first sending off in a wembley FA Cup Final (1985) - 57 years old today
MikeO
Peter Reid......responsible for the first sending off in a wembley FA Cup Final (1985) I thought Kevin Moran was responsible for that....with an assist from Peter Willis . Victim being responsible for a crime is an interesting concept though; must be an American idea .
Dalziel Kane
Yes, Reid was responsible for getting Moran dismissed, as in that, he was the player in question on who the foul was committed. In the end, it didn't work in our favor as even with the extra man we still lost the game in extra time. Fatigue simply had taken over from a then very hard season of endeavor. One Birthday today Smart Arridge - In what could be one of the greatest names ever to play for the club, Welsh international defensive unit of the late nineteeth century - would have been 141 years old today

Dalziel Kane
being quick Keith Newton - Defensive unit of the Catterick tenure that was short lived but did win a League Championship in 1970 - would have been 72 years old today Alex Young A.K.A Sandy - prolific early 20th century forward who scored the only goal of the 1906 FA Cup Final and the clubs fourth highest recorded goalscorer, believed executed at a later age or developed into madness by the time of demise. Records remain unclear - would have been 133 years old today No significant games on this day (friendlies/pre season etc)
