Shukes
SSN said were in talks with Jack Butland. Do we need another keeper lol? was hoping we are looking for another mid.
Romey 1878
This would be a weird one. Not least because of the price we'd need to pay.
itsnowak
i'd sure hope not. im fine with timmy and i'd much rather spend the money on a midfielder
c1982
Have we actually got money in the coffers? I'd imagine it'd be a buy and loan back... Odd one! I like him though but would much prefer a midfield maestro!!! £6m in installments!!!
Shukes
birmingham asking for 8m apparently.
marcopaulo
would we loan him back to brum to play for the season? we don't have 6m to spunk on another one to end up in the keepers graveyard...although we do need to look towards howards retirement i guess

pete0
I was going to say earlier that we haven't been linked to many young keepers this summer, but didn't want to jinx it.
marcopaulo
PETE!! stop fuckin thinkin :shaking fist: seriously though...if it is true..big if cos i don't think it is...like romey i wouldn't really be happy payin that much for such an unproven keeper..although if it was all performance based i'd take it..we do seriously need to consider the years after tim

Romey 1878
If it's performance based and we're paying, say £2million upfront, then thats alright. But, with so many other clubs having shown interest I couldn't see Brum going for that.
marcopaulo
i couldn't really but if the offer is there and there isn't any from anywhere else then who knows? i still think it's bullshit
pete0
We shouldn't buy a keeper unless one better than Tim comes along. The club should save the 20k a week they'd be willing to pay a young one and in 6-8 years time (so have saved up £6-8 mil in the kitty) when Tim is on the decline. We should pay the premium for a fully developed keeper. Edit: @marco apologies Edited August 31, 2012 by pete0
marcopaulo
will 6-8m get you a premiium keeper in 6-8 years time? when tim will be 39 btw...

Unless he gets a career ruining injury he should last until he's about 39 most keepers are in their prime around 32-6! Martyn only retired at 40 because of Doctor's orders. marcopaulo
not at all but we're past the days of having mega ageing players in our squad also regardless of the tim thing i still stand by that 6-8m will not get you a top class keeper in that time..if the deal was right i'd love to sign butland and loan him back Edited August 31, 2012 by marcopaulo
Peter H
not at all but we're past the days of having mega ageing players in our squad I agree with you on the above, but I do love throwing Nevilles name around. We'd have £12 to buy a keeper, that is more than enough.. unless you're Sunderland and buy shite like Gordan.
Avinalaff
Nev was a great keeper, but the biggest hoofer we ever had. Different game back then. I'm intrigued at us looking at Butland. I'll bet not many expected that one.
marcopaulo
then we're payin bigger wages to someone else? so the wages don't really come into it..and who's to say he won't be better than tim in 2-3 years..look how quick joe hart progressed
Hafnia
It doesn't add up this one. We have mucha, £6m would contribute nicely to Lewis holtby... Succession planning great, but Howard is young enough to allow us time for this. Strange..,,
Avinalaff
Maybe Moyes has more money than we think? Getting a young keeper is a great idea, but he is unproven, and not sure that price is a good deal.
Zoo
I actually woulden't mind this, I'm too tired to type as I've just got back from football but think about this; -Sell Mucha either tonight or Janaury and have Butland as No.2 -Sell Howard next season (as his error against Villa isn't the first he's done in a blue shirt and he's getting on). The money we would get for Howard should we sell him would certainly be within the region of what we pay for Butland so IMO if we got him it'd be a good move. He's really young too so its a fine investment for the future.

He's been to the Olympics and earned an England cap, whilst he's not established he's certainly proved how good he is. msloan78
