Avinalaff
Perhaps we should drop Baines, Two of the goals came from his man drifting past him. Maybe we can play Heitinga at left back. ? I think Baines has been poor all season, and if we had another left back (Drenthe?) I'd drop him as a warning without a moments notice. I sold him from my fantasy team last week. Needs to pull his socks up, as do quite a few of our team at the moment.

Despite being poor, he has still been one of the better performers at the back. Problem for him at the moment is that he is getting no cover most of the time. Osman is drfiting so far inside most of the time, that he is being left with more on his plate than he should. However thats no excuse for the 2 goals we conceeded that he was one of the culprits. I would also add that if you drop Baines, you actually drop our main attacking outlet.

He's not been getting forward much at all this season by his own standards and he was also at fault for the City goals amongst others. It strikes me as though some of our players have lost interest, and are simply going through the motions. We can't afford to become complacent. The league is a lot harder this year than it's been for some time, with teams very capable of beating us if we don't work harder. Everton used to be a boring football team that scored from set pieces. We then started to play attractive football, and no longer needed the big men. Now we have sold our most creative players, yet no longer have the set piece threat, so we are floating in space with no ideas waiting for something to save us. It won't happen. We need to get ruthless, and if that means dropping our best players (on paper) then so be it.

By all means be ruthless and drop those that have severly under performed this season, such as Jags, Cahill (at times), Saha, Osman (out wide), Coleman, but while I do agree Baines hasnt been his best this year, he is by far our best LB, he is probably our best deadball specialist and he is one of the only players looking to get forward when he is given the chance. There are several people ahead of him in the pecking order to get dropped. I do agree with our Set Pieces though. We have barely threatened with them for over a season now. The goals that Lescott scored in the 08/09 season (I think) were crucial to us and they did make the difference between winning games and drawing them. For the size and aeriel prowess our squad possesses, we should be doing much better than we are IMO.

It's hard for Baines to get forward when he knows there won't be any cover for his forward runs due to the wide man going walkabout. The reason, I feel, that we look incredibly shit at scoring from set-pieces is that we never vary them. Most corners go to the same spot in the box. We're too predictable in every aspect.
