I'm looking to build, so more looking for parts etc. It's a bit cheaper than buying a new rig. I've not yet decided on whether to upgrade or just start from scratch. I could build one for a lot less. They're only bits plugged into each other when all said and done.

The only thing I've never done is attach a motherboard or cpu, as I've been lucky and had my pc's built by friends so far. Changed just about everything else though. He's done some crazy stuff with his, it runs a rediculous speeds
StevO
components are pretty decent prices at ebuyer. need a new hard drive for my laptop, easy job but i refuse to pay for windows, and finding a copy to use my old product number on seems to be a nightmare so far. old contact for copies has gone off the map. Louis
You don't need to buy a new windows if you have one, you just ring MS and they'll give you a new code, or at least they did for me..

MikeO
Not a new build but I've touched on this before....I need to get a new PC for Josh (was going to be a laptop but we've changed that) and it needs to be capable of a certain amount of gaming. Most specifically he wants to be able to run F1 which he bought on Steam a while back but hasn't been able to play without lag. The graphics requirement for that is GeForce 7800/Radion X1800 or above. So what should I be looking at....and where? Any ideas? Bearing in mind I need to save for this so the cheaper I can get it for the sooner he gets it .

Bearing in mind I need to save for this so the cheaper I can get it for the sooner he gets it . With those requirements, anything built in the last 2-3 years would suit. This would work out to be very good value if you had a copy of Windows and a monitor already handy. It'll play all the latest games with pretty decent settings at a smooth framerate. MikeO
Thanks Ian...no copy of Windows as it's always come pre-installed on everything I've bought...and only a 4:3 monitor in the attic so that needs to be updated. But a useful guide .
MikeO
How's this one? http://www.ebuyer.com/272145-zoostorm-gaming-desktop-pc-7873-0276 The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTS450...is there an easy way to compare these...ie is that one comparable, better or worse than GeForce 7800/Radion X1800? Or do I just keep coming back here and asking the wise ? Still just researching and gathering info....going to be a couple of months 'til I have the cash . That's far, far, far better than the 2 cards you listed. They don't even make those cards anymore, mate! Very decent PC that, the processor is 2 years old but it was very high end when it was released and it's still very good value and it'll be as good as or better than anything you'd find in any laptop sub £1250! Check these benchmarks for the graphics card and the laptop: GPU: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=416&Itemid=72 CPU: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core2+Quad+Q8400+%40+2.66GHz Pretty good value that PC, from where I'm standing anyway. But with currency conversions/the fact I pay 35%+ more for parts in Ireland, you might get a better opinion on price from Avinalaff. But it'll certainly play nearly every game on the market at good settings at playable framerates. More than sufficient for a casual gamer. Avinalaff
OK, if I can have my thread back please? I've now ordered all the parts. It's been a very expensive exercise, and probably not far off 2k by the time I add up. Should get delivery of bits and bobs throughout the week. Your basic pc is made up of a case, Central Processing unit (cpu), Hard drive, Memory (ram), Motherboard, Graphics card, Power supply, CPU cooler, DVD R/W and operating system. Basically it's a case of researching what parts work with each other, determined by the motherboard, and putting them together. The parts I bought are all high end, so it will last a good few years. If I was to buy the same spec pc I'd probably be looking at over 3k.
