Avinalaff
What do you think about these 'anti riot squads' in Enfield etc, patrolling the streets? Is this really an effort to stop rioters, or is it just an opportunity to kick some ass? No way do normal lads get that kind of crew together, outside of organised groups, so are they E.D.L and is it an opportunity for racist revenge? What do you think? Obviously some there to look out for the community, but mostly footy fans making sure the game goes a head and footy hooligans who would be happy to give a kickin' win all round. Avinalaff
Hmmmm ... for me, it sounded a bit sour when the guy turned round and said 'they're not English'. Sounds like it could be a platform for the wrong type of group.
Lowensda
Hmmmm ... for me, it sounded a bit sour when the guy turned round and said 'they're not English'. Personally i took that as being, "how can you call yourself ENglish if you're looting and rioting in your own country" and "it's not what the English do"
marcopaulo
i know the edl organised stuff for this up here..seen it on facebook cos someone i know is sadly a big fan of them so it wouldn't surprise me if it was organised down there also
StevO
I have no problem with good people defending their own streets, to take it away from the racist angle the first people to defend themselves from the riots were the foreign communities in London and Birmingham. The likes of the uprising in Enfield have my support, so long as it is to get rid of the pricks causing the trouble, and the them pricks get hurt well that's just a bit of rough justice for me! I look at it more as though he meant " guys who aren't English are rioting in England". The last thing we need is mobs dealing out justice to kids, or anyone else that matter. If they scare the rioters off, then great, but if they attack the rioters, not great. My initial sentiment was to just wade in and knock hell out of them, but then I realised most are young gullible kids who have been involved through peer pressure more than anything. It's the leaders that need the kicking, but the leaders are probably organised gangs anyway, so in that respect, let both organised nutters go find a big hole and jump in. The same country that made it illegal to smack our kids now want mums and dads to discipline them and keep them in. Bit ironic?

StevO
My mum and dad were telling me they should bring back the Cain, before they remembered that if a parent can't give a kid a smack then a teacher has no chance. The threat of a smack from my mum was always enough as a kid. Had no idea what dad would do if I stepped out of line so I made sure I never found out! Matt
True, I would pick a smack over the 'i'm not mad am jus disappointed speech' any day. that used to make me sick! Another one was 1 word - "fine", said in a very distinct way which basically meant the same as i'm not mad am jus disappointed'. That cut deeper than anything physical
marcopaulo
not really of a belief either way..raised well a kid doesn't turn out a wanker smacked or not..i used to get a clout off me mam when i was a bad un though and that stopped me

marcus jones
The threat of the dap in school was enough to keep all the pupils in my primary school in line. Mind you all my family had some sort of punishment in school, if not the cane then a couple of slaps or the old tennis shoe. Certainly did not do me any harm. Avinalaff
Discipline doesnt have to be physical so i dont see the irony at all. So you would prefer it to be psychological then as opposed to physical? The whole point is about deterrent. The irony is that the government removed long established deterrents but then complains when the kids are without discipline. Whether we feel the deterrents are right or wrong is another subject. We didn't 'have' to smack our kids, as long as the kids knew we could. The teachers didn't 'have' to give the cane, providing the kids knew they could. The whole dilemma is that now kids know they can't be touched. Add to that the insufficient numbers of police officers and it's easy to anticipate folk taking advantage. I was never physically punished as a kid and ive never broken the law, work hard etc. Any punishment was purely physiological (which doesnt mean physiological abuse). Actually, just remembered that our history teacher used to make us sit on the heating pipe in front of the class if we did something wrong! It was more the being at the front of the class on show that was the deterrent than the pipe though.
StevO
Pretty sure the heater pipe is abuse! I agree as above, it's not the smack that did it for me it was the fear of it.

Lowensda
yesterday, they had sunday court sessions going on in some places to process the numbers through They did indeed, my old escorting job gave me a call and I had to take some of the little bastards to some secure units. Kids like, i genuinely think that they're going harder on the kids than the adults this time around! The sunday courts were only open as a 'show your face in court asap, then receive your sentance in the coming weeks'. Most of the lads had their court dates set for this weeek, i think they've done the Sunday court just to set dates and have them banged up quick.
