Louis
Owing to the claims create created by the war, many of your players have been engaged in the maintenance, at enormous cost, of the priceless inheritance of freedom. Many have given their lives, limbs and health in order that we at home might enjoy the blessings of safety. They have spent in this supreme effort, six of the best years of their very short football life. Those who are spared to return to civil life may be desirous of resuming their pre-war occupation. They are conscious in doing so they are handicapped by six years' abstention from the game and that they are six years older. When they do apply for reinstatement, I hope that , remembering the sacrifices that they have made and remembering what might have been our lot had they failed in the effort, we shall - and I hope every club without exception will - hold out the right hand of sportsmanship and fellowship to each of their players... a unanimous gesture to this would resound throughout the world of sport as typical of the high standard of Association football in general, and the league competition in particular....
