Louis
Football in 2009 is, whether fans like it or not, more than just a sport. It is big, big business. Everton and Liverpool have to compete in the Premier League against teams funded by some of the wealthiest people in the world, and that meansmatching them in multi-million pound transfer deals and eye-watering salaries for players. Our clubs have great traditions on the football field, but in the future their skills in the world of high finance are going to be tested just as strenuously if they are to stayat the pinnacle of the game. Join us on Wednesday as we throw the business of football under the spotlight in a live television debate. Robert Elstone, chief executive of Everton Football Club, will be joining us in our TV studio to answer your questions on the business of football, alongside football finance expert Professor Tom Cannon, and LDP Head of Sport John Thompson. Business Editor Bill Gleeson will be chairing the discussion and putting your questions to our panel. CaptainFerguson10
Good! Will be very interesting explaining his comments about transfers this summer, and why we had to sell to then buy!
MikeO
Good! Will be very interesting explaining his comments about transfers this summer, and why we had to sell to then buy! But unless he says, "Bill's lying to you and so am I and we're raking a nice little earner into a numbered Swiss account...." you'll say he's lying . What will be interesting about that ? London Blue
But unless he says, "Bill's lying to you and so am I and we're raking a nice little earner into a numbered Swiss account...." you'll say he's lying . What will be interesting about that ? Nothing, but Elstone is quite respected in the field with regards to finance (obviously not by Everton fans!) so will be interesting to hear his views on debt in sport and the plans for Evertons finaces. Also his comparisons with Rugby which was where he learnt his trade I believe. The conspiricy theorists need a pantomime villan to boo and blame things on, and we are lucky as we have 2 at Everton. Everybody now "He's behind you"
Hafnia
I don't mind the fact that the club is being run prudently at present, I want to see some light at the end of the tunnel in terms of "why can teams such as Spurs invest heavily in transfers and overtake us?" - the answer is that they have investors and are backed by money men. I would be intrigued to know whether our ability to obtain a buyer or heavy financial backing is reliant on moving to Kirby and will this financial outly be funded by someone other than the club or Bill Kenwright. What attendances can we expect and what will be the revenue generated by such a move. surely as many people have stated, we are attractive to investors, especially given that other clubs with less kudos manage to secure investment. Louis
I'm not interested at all in what Tom Cannon and the sports editor have to say! Louis
http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2009/09/08/join-live-tv-debate-on-everton-fc-s-finances-with-liverpool-daily-post-business-92534-24630832/ WHETHER fans like it or not, football is more than just a sport, but is there a danger our big two clubs could be left behind in the money stakes? Everton and Liverpool have to compete in the Premier League against teams funded by some of the wealthiest people in the world, and that means matching them in multi-million pound transfer deals and eye-watering salaries for players. Our local clubs have great traditions on the football field, but in the future their skills in the world of high finance are going to be tested just as strenuously if they are to stay at the pinnacle of the game. Join us on Wednesday as we place football finances under the spotlight in our Business of Football online TV programme. Everton’s top money man, chief executive Robert Elstone, will be joining us in the studio to answer your questions, alongside football finance expert Professor Tom Cannon, and Daily Post head of sport John Thompson. Business editor Bill Gleeson will be chairing the discussion and putting your questions to our panel. There will also be a live blog running alongside the programme allowing viewers to take part in the discussions. Issues sure to be debated include Everton’s proposed new stadium in Kirkby and whether Merseyside’s clubs can continue to compete with Manchester United, Chelsea and big spenders such as Manchester City. Corporate financier James Dow, of Dow Schofield Watts in Daresbury, says very few investors ever make money from owning football clubs. He said: “Ultimately what you end up with is an asset, and what you hope is it's a desirable asset – in some ways like a painting. “Somebody wants to own the football club. They want that satisfaction of being the owner. And that's effectively the only way you can make a return. “The only way you can really make a profit on that investment is if somebody perceives it's going to be worth more in the future.” Tomorrow’s debate follows the success of July’s LDP Business televised debate on unemployment. TO TAKE part in tomorrow’s debate, send your questions now to trinitymirrormerseyside@ googlemail.com. Log in from 10am tomorrow to take part in the live blog and put your questions to the panel, and to watch the live TV discussion which begins at 12noon. CaptainFerguson10
That's interesting as the video is only 33 minutes long, some will say unfortunately. Back to Elstone, he said Everton spent the Lescott money and 8 million (3 million on the budget) this summer. Sorry but when he refused to reveal the Billy fee and how much Everton got straight up for Lescott, it sounds like double bluffing. With leadership like this, no wonder the fans are disillusioned. Romey 1878
Wow, £8million spent, should we grateful for that? It's a joke. Elstone is no different to the other clowns at this club.

CaptainFerguson10
Wow, £8million spent, should we grateful for that? It's a joke. Elstone is no different to the other clowns at this club. Correct it seems. He ducked the important questions, though most were extremely watered down versions of what fans actually asked. So does that mean they spent 30mil? expensive signing on fees there for a few players. I share your cynicism. Sounds like not all of the money's will be going thru the books!!! <_< Well again Elstone smoothly ducked the question regarding how much Billy D cost us, and how much we received directly from Citeh for Lescott. Most of his answers were speculative, but that's good enough for some fans. The funniest thing he said was how Kirby will be radically better than Goodison in every way, that's when I switched off! Finn balor
How the fuck does that add up? £8 miilion on top of lescott? Billy £9 miilion (reported), Johnny £6 million and Distin say £5.5 million. So thats £20.5 million. We let Shandy and Valente go who were probably on £25 to £30 grand a week and we got rid of Lescotts wages which were probably close to £50,000 grand. Random figures used which adds up to around £5 miilion saved on wages between them. Obviously we have the new guys wages but so what? So is Elstone saying Lescott went for £15 million? where has that £5 million gone then and on what? Does he think were stupid? Why is he throwing the wages on top of it? Every club who transfers anybody knows wages are seperate! Even this "phantom" £5 million spent are we meant to be grateful about this HUGE outlay? fucking joke! Adpom
heit on 55k a week an i imagine he got a big sign on bonus. Depends if he took wages in to account, but i imagine billy/distin an defo heit are on more then the ones who left were. Don't forget with the 50% tax rate coming in Everton have to pay the players more, so the players still get the same net amount.
CaptainFerguson10
I've been told that Billy had six months left on his contract, if this is true then I very much doubt Everton paid more than 2 million for him upfront. Again I want clarity from our esteemed leaderships, that and the truth!
