Memmaclub
Bare with me: 1. Moyes seems to be building a young squad. 2. He is bringing in obscure players from abroad on the QT 3. He is brining throw a number of academy players to the first team 4. He works on a tight budget 5. He has gradually built up a quality squad and is now consistently knowcing on the door. He isn't trying to turn the club round in one season and he has made massive strides in a few years on a limited budget I honestly believe if we keep hold of moyes and keep the current transfer/academy policy we could crack the top 4 even the top 2. And not selling first team or even important squad players is core to this working.

Toffee1976
I don't think we're anywhere near le arse's standards, We haven't really challenged them - We only pipped villa to 5th because they lost Laursen who I think was their best player. I can't see us getting very far this season coming, man city and Tottenham and possibly villa will finish close to 5th this time round, I hope I'm wrong. dark
As long as we're not like Arsenal in terms of being well liked but not winning anything then that's fine. Agree totally. I also think that if anyone is going to knock Arsenal from their 'fourth place perch' it will be us. We have had stability up the top of the table for a while now and have shown that we can get into the Champions League. It's going to be a good opener at Goodison, may the best 'Arsenal' win And we have one frog - Louis Saha Wenger had his policy out of principle, we're just fucking poor.

Adpom
well, to be honest dark, we never got into the champions league did we. there is still a massive gulf of quality between the top four and us. I don't think tis that big a gulf. I think we are missing 1 player with that bit of class, a game changer, a match winner, can produce something out of nothing, we finished 9 points behind, but we should have beaten them an Chelsea at home, as well as not throw away a 2-0 win over the barcodes. thehelmet
Losing Arteta and the Yak lost us 4th by that rate? How many goals more would a healthy Yak have got us? And the Villa games spring to mind as well. I can see City challenging for 5th but Villa will fall back and Tottenham might slip in at 7-8 imho.. DangerMouse
I would say possibly 2 players away, but then we are also a million miles away from signing anybody of that calibre I would say any team looking to do anything in this league needs AT LEAST 2 world class players.... We have ZERO... If you look at the top teams they then have at least 5 or 6 v v good players.... We have 1 maybe 2 but Ill go for 1.... Jags.. and to define that.... pick our first 11... how many would get in the United side..... there you go maybe 1 So I think were a million miles away... best of the rest maybe... but not good enough.... I think anyone thinking anything different is living in a dream world..... sorry but its the truth....and it hurts me to have to say it..... Next up....... when will the likes of Liverpool & Arsenal start pushing for "5th place gets you in chamipions league" Edited July 14, 2009 by DangerMouse

CraccerC
i think we're miles away from the top 4 personally, our side is nowhere near as good as any of theirs...not even close.
Ian C
I think that's a bit unfair. I think its just our midfield that isn't up to par.
StevO
I think that's a bit unfair. I think its just our midfield that isn't up to par. you got to be kidding? do we have a striker of the same quality as drogba, anelka, rooney, berbatov, torres, adebayor (till he goes) or van persie? we dont have a midfield that can touch any of theirs, we have a good defence, but only three players up to the task. Got to add in the Everton factor though! There's no doubt, were not as good on paper man to man and never will be, just too skint! But a team can be far greater than the sum of its parts [or far worse as Newcastle and Tottenham prove consistently each season]. So i say keep the faith, last season we had barely any players and key players injured, few good signings this year particularly the right hand side and maybe just maybe! Besides we are all Everton fans half the fun is hoping and praying for the unlikely.
CraccerC
you say that but we're not top 4 and if we're not making significant additions we're not going to be top 4...regardless of team spirit, if the players aren't there you can't expect osman to be an arshavin or neville to be an essien...they have their limits and we're not even close to being top 4 without a lot of luck. arsenal you would probably say are the weakest side are we nearly as good as they are? no chance. it's not pessimism it's called being realistic, the club needs investment to move forward. Adpom
They have, whichi s what i said we need, an thats match winners, 1 or 2 really class players that can turn a draw in to a win, or turn a defacite around, at the moment we don;t have that. Also if you compare benchs in most weeks, there far far better.

Yakubu is a natural goalscorer that would score even more goals than he has here if he had the midfield service from say your Gerrards, Alonsos, Lampard, Fabregas' etc. certainly more than most of those strikers barring Adebayor/Drogba who are similar sort of strikers. As I said, our midfield is nowhere near top 4, only Arteta has the proper class to make it at that level tbh. Pienaar would be a useful squad player. That's about it really. 3 of our back 4 are top top top class. Hibbert lets us down but this time next year I hope to be saying all 4 of them are class if Naughton signs And I like Tim as a goalkeeper. Rarely makes mistakes and rarely has a bad turn of form. CraccerC
howard is better than almunia, but that's it...howard's not even in the top 5 keepers IMO he's lucky to have the defence he has in front of him.

Completely agree we are nowhere near good enough to be top 4 and we are not likely to be in the forseeable future ( unless of cause the top 4 all sell their best players and replace them with donkeys!)
