Louis
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/sep/0...ssandpublishing Trinity Mirror is to close the plant that prints its Liverpool Daily Post and Echo newspapers as part of a cost-cutting exercise, placing up to 100 jobs at risk of redundancy and ending 154 years of newspaper printing in the city. The publisher is transferring printing of its north-west newspaper division, which also includes the Huddersfield Daily Examiner and weekly newspapers in Cheshire and Merseyside, to a newer plant in Oldham over the next 15 months. Trinity Mirror aims to close the Liverpool site at the end of 2009. It is expected that a number of those facing redundancy at the Liverpool site will be offered new jobs in Oldham. However, the remaining roles will be made redundant over the next 15 months. The company said a consultation process has begun today with affected staff. Trinity Mirror plans to invest £7.5m to create a single production site and extend new colour presses at the plant in Oldham, which came on line in December 2007. Printing at the new site, Trinity Mirror said, would enable its regional titles in the north-west and Yorkshire to benefit from improved print quality, full colour, extra potential for inserts and substantially reduced operating costs. "This has been a very difficult decision given our history of printing in Liverpool and the impact on our team there," said Rupert Middleton, the group director of manufacturing for Trinity Mirror. "But this plan will give the north-west publishing business clear benefits of improved print quality, full colour and enhanced inserting capabilities that are currently unavailable in Liverpool as well as reduced costs."
