Daniel
Sick and tired of all this money being kicked around instead of footballs. All I see on Sky Sports and Setanta is Robhinio! Man City! Al-Fahmin! When City loose on Saturday to a real team like Chelsea that should shut their fans up and piss off a few oil shieks. I mean at the end of the day Robhinio was never a god. One player can't tranform a team. FromBelgium
Not what I meant, but you're always a rich man's poor and vice versa. So you can't really complain about Man C getting a lot of dosh out of nowhere when at the same time you buy a player for an amount worth of almost his club's annual budget. Does it put it in perspective?

Does it put it in perspective? I think Danny is talking about the greater good of the game. It was bad enough for us to survive as a traditional English football club when Abramovich's money ruled the roost. This lot that have taken over at Citeh are fifty times richer than Abramovich which means no club will be able to hang on to its players in the world. On Monday they bid £50 mil for Torres and £130 mil for Ronaldo without making any enquiries as to their availability, that is more than 80% of the clubs in the prem league are actually worth, players included. Clubs say that they will hold on to players until the player hears of the wages on offer, these guys will be paying players around £1,000,000 a month before you know it and they wouldn't draw breath I can actually see Abramovich throwing the towel in at Chelsea because he is by no means the biggest fish in the football pond any more, nor can he ever be. These guys are used to getting their own way because of money If that happens Chelsea will have to sell like mad before bankruptcy sets in..........now that might not be a bad thing Seriously be happy you still have a competitive league...we don't any more but we'll soldier on Incidentally we all have helped buy Citeh, look at the increased fuel prices Edited September 3, 2008 by Jimmy the blue
FromBelgium
Mind you, our league is not that competitive. We have Anderlecht, FC Bruges and Standard plus the odd Genk and Ghent as possible troublemakers. It's pretty much like Holland with Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV. Cercle Bruges in the top 5 last season was very much a one-shot. It's much tighter at the bottom of the table, which is fun as well. zequist
That's true. Isn't it something like 41 times in the last 50 years that one of those three clubs has won the league? Then again, football has become such a plutocratic sport (ironically, for its working class roots) that it's hard to find established leagues anywhere anymore that aren't absolutely dominated by just a few teams. And as long as the EU refuses to allow UEFA or the national FAs to establish salary caps, revenue sharing, or any other mechanism that's designed to create a more level playing field, that's never going to change. I've heard the observation made that Europeans are socialists in everything except sports, while Americans are free marketers in everything except sports. It's kind of funny, but it's true...all of our major sports leagues in the US have some combination of a salary cap and/or revenue sharing, and they're designed to prevent exactly the sort of thing that's happening with Man City...some fabulously wealthy person buying up a club, outspending everyone else by 5-1 or 10-1 margins, and turning what's supposed to be an athletic competition into a complete joke. Of course it's also much easier to implement those controls when it's only one country and not beholden to an extralegal body like the EU. Football is such an international game with players hopping not just teams but leagues all the time, that it's completely impractical for one country to decide to implement cost controls on its own - they'd get trampled as all their star players bolted for the other leagues that were still allowing unrestricted spending. There would have to be a broad consensus reached by all of the wealthiest leagues and probably most of the second-tier leagues as well that they all take those steps to balance things out, and for many reasons that will never happen. FromBelgium
Bang on. However, Standard walking the league last season (1 defeat in 34 games, and that was on round 31 just after the title was mathematically secured as they made it hard for themselves with 4 consecutive draws) was also a one-shot. The thing is that the level of Belgian football has sunk so low that the team at the bottom of the table can beat anyone on their day, which makes it is still fun to watch somehow, but dear oh dear a mid-table game can de dreadful, a Fulham v. Boro type of thing. BTW, sorry if I'm boring you with Belgian football. Feels more and more like I'll have to make it to Goodison or to a London game with you guys if you don't mind. I'm having fun here! I'll remain a Saints faithful, though Those Bally, KK, Channon, Shearer and Le Tissier days have left their mark... Bring back the Dell days! OK, I'll get me coat. FromBelgium
well, how would you fell if sudenly someone injected a ton of cash into a club, turning them from a minor nuisance into a potential challenger for your team's spot?? Does that put things in perspective for you as well? It will never happen for sheer economic reasons: how would anyone in their right minds inject tons of cash on such a small market? Three teams (Andershit, Bruges and Standard) have national sponsors with some relative international recognition. Smaller teams are sponsored by the pub down the road and that's all down to international TV coverage. Belgium is not very attractive, is it (except for food and beer, you'll grant me that )? So you can't really complain about Man C getting a lot of dosh out of nowhere when at the same time you buy a player for an amount worth of almost his club's annual budget. Does it put it in perspective? Firstly, I agree with the comment about showing some respect to our foriegn friends. They have made an interesting contribution and to disrespect them just lowers you to level i expect from Man Utd or Redshite fans. In answer to this comment, Everton have had a significant transfer budget compared to previous seasons due to Uefa cup Qual, Sky TV and 5th spot in the EPL. In order to continue to compete, that money needed to be spent. Moyes has made no secret he was prepared to spend on a young up and coming midfielder. The profile target was Moutinho, but he and his club priced him out of a move. Moyes has had his eye on Fellaini for a couple of years and has decided he is now worth the money, probably reinforced by his display against the red shite. This much for a young European player is cheap, Rooney cost Man U £30 million+ and he was 18. As good as he is, I don't see his value increasing if at all. Fellaini could become a shrewd investment if he continues to develop his game. If he was English, he would have probably cot £20 million plus. The frustration for Everton fans is not that we think we are paupers, but that on the face of it, our board does not seem to be doing much to encourage serious investment into the club to remain competitive and move the club forward. EFC are by far on of the biggest clubs in England, if not the world and it constantly baffles people as to why we are overlooked, when inferior clubs are bought up and have massive cash injections i.e. Villa, Man City, West Ham, Portsmouth etc etc. With a serious financier, and with our current team and manager, I belive we will not just be competing for UEFA and CL, but also realistically for the EPL title. Our history and stature deserves it, as do the fans, who are among the most loyal and respectful you will find.

Good post, that being said, I don't remember Portsmouth or West Ham spending much in the transfer window, I know Portsmouth signed Crouch but they also sold that guy in midfield to Inter Milan and Redknapp has been saying he has no money left, whilst West Ham sold Ferdinand and McCartney leading Curbishley to walk out, all is not quite so rosy with those clubs - a warning to Everton fans who just want anyone to take over (look at Newcastle as well). One other point, Villa have won a European Cup haven't they? if so, then they probably shouldn't be bracketed as an inferior club - they have a huge catchment area as well. They got Rooney for 20 million, 10 million one year and 10 million the following year plus add ons over the next 5 years, so far i think we have had about 4.5 million in add ons, so he has cost them nowhere near £30 million Plus, and whats more he's never likely to. Sporting4ever
yeah, there's no doubt about that. the simple fact of the league you play in is much more important than what you're really worth. however, that seems to be changing a bit. i didn't see the enormous values that we appeared to be heading to a few years ago. italians, spaniards and brits have been much more "timid" in the lsat couple of years, and, since players are, imo, getting more and more skilled, it's clear that the markets are going to change. a lot less players left portugal this year, and that appears to me that it's because the market is becoming less atractive, i.e., players are not as cheap as they were. that's why EFC got the belgian boy, cuz, they didn't think moutinho was as cheap as they'd like, or they didn't have the resources for him. however, i wasn't expecting such a high value for a belgian. maybe it was a bit of desperation, since it was last day, but i think that, like portugal, other markets are evolving too. bargains are becoming rare, so, i see prices going up in the future. and i'm happy to stick around, like i said, i enjoy talking to u guys, and im curious about what's happening at ur club. soft spot growing
