If you 'tweet' it appears on your profile and in all of your followers' timelines. If you reply to someone or 'mention' them then it appears in their Mentions tab. Obviously if they are following you then it will appear in their timeline as well. People can also 'retweet' - which means they then send your tweet to all of their followers because they found it interesting.

There are many ways to use Twitter. Some people use it like holystove does (My Dad included) and just follow people and organisations who tweet information and links to articles they might be interested in.

Other people like me tweet themselves about this and that. It works really well if you are involved with a large group of people who are all following each other, be that their family and friends or people who share an interest in music, sport or politics or something like that. I'm a bit of a schizo in this regard, I have real life friends who follow me, a v. large number of Evertonians and some Irish people with whom I share an interest in politics with. The entire thing is one big public conversation, basically you tweet an opinion or something that happened and see the reaction. Sometimes it sparks a debate, sometimes it's something trivial that people find funny etc. etc. My truly favourite time is during an Everton match when my timeline is filled with instant reactions and exclamations to match events - it gets hilarious

There's no 'right' way to use Twitter really, it is what you make it. They do say, however, that Facebook is about not talking to people you wish you didn't know whereas Twitter is chatting constantly to people you wish you knew better! You do meet some really great people through it too. And you get to converse with people you never thought you'd be able to (Celebrities, journalists, politicians etc. etc.)

Might as well go in the back garden and gossip over the fence with your neighbor, how can you find it interesting when somebody tweets about just having a bowl of porridge.

Its the tweeters who talk a load of shite. ;)

People rarely tweet about nonsense like that, that's a misconception held by people who've never looked at Twitter and have no idea what it's about.

Twitter is just a medium for instant communication and publication. It is like a worldwide conversation on the events happening at that second around the world - be they political, sporting, televisual etc.

I listen to the radio and watch TV if i want to keep up with the news.

I dont want to know that a bloke in Kettering has just got up and found he's been burgled during the night  How very interesting.

But if its what you want Ian, thats your choice not mine. :P

The news is biased and filtered. Twitter gives you access to the raw information, images and video from the source. Why should the BBC, Sky and Rupert Murdoch tell us what's going on when we can find out for ourselves?

So you live in a house that gets no newspaper, and has no radio or TV, but you take everything you see in tweets as gospel.

Tweeting is just like having a diary but allowing everybody to read it, why would you do that. ? :o.

Like i said its an ego thing, most tweeters just want to see how many fellow tweeters are following them, and how many friends they can get, you obviously enjoy that side of it Ian. ;)

Nonsense, it's not about taking it as gospel. It's about getting information instantly from real people on the ground. Studies have shown that people who grew up with technology have a fantastic ability to quickly gauge the usefulness of information and and it's authenticity.

There was a massive student protest here last week that ended up with various violent clashes with the police. Because of the official line from the police, both Irish TV channels, the radio and the daily newspapers said the students started the clashes whereas from the pictures and video I was seeing from Twitter showed me that an element of Trotskyites and Socialist Republicans broke away from the protest premeditatedly and started trouble at another location and the cops then riot charged the main body of students preemptively using excessive force. None of this came out in the mainstream media for days.

I'm finding it incredible that someone of your age and experience, Bill, is completely dismissing something childishly and, insulting millions of people including myself while having absolutely no clue what he's talking about. Quite frankly, you're talking a load of shite.

Nice post Ian but it doesnt alter my opinion, i was probably on twitter before you were, but soon got out, so i'm not just dismissing it out of hand. I dont think its any better now than it was, it just reaches a much wider audience.

So whilst you continue tweeting please excuse me if i continue talking shite, its an age thing. :P

Ian - news, papers, internet articles are all forms of media, as is Twitter. Theyre all biased and there are a lot of fakes in all sides of media that are there trying to deceive for their own gains. Its no different from the BBC broadcasting an article. The only way to get reliable information on big stories is to research many different sources. Twitter can be one of them but taking any tweet by its word is a little naive, as would be thinking that CNN/BBC/Fox etc broadcast gospel.

I tried it mate and it didnt do anything for me. If its your cup of tea then grand! maybe i will come round to it eventually, i always take a while to get onto these trends.

Where exactly do I say I take a 140 character tweet as gospel? Twitter is not a single source - it is a medium through which thousands of sources are available for consumption - all of which must be judged on their own merits. Twitter is completely neutral in this regard, there is no central figure in control editing the information to fit quality, moral or style standards unlike in the mainstream media, you are seeing the same raw information that the various mainstream media are seeing and you can then make your own judgement on them, much like the mainstream media will make their own judgement on them.

How do you filter the 'noise'? See who's tweeting it, check their biography, their previous tweets, who they follow and how many people follow them. How many people have retweeted it? Have any mainstream journalists/trusted bloggers retweeted it? Are there any linked primary sources like raw video footage or pictures etc. etc. The entire thing is based on the idea of the "Wisdom of the crowd" - the idea that a crowd of diverse opinions is inherently wise and discerning.

where do i mention 140 character tweet, i dont even know what that means!

Maybe i wasnt clear. You said Twitter is a collection of raw info/opinions/videos etc and you judge for yourself , right? I was trying to point out that the BBC/Sky etc are just an inbetween they just process the raw information of these multiple stories from reliable sources too, many of whom are probably the ones youre talking about being on Twitter. The trouble is the BBC simplify it ( far too simplified if you ask me) so that the below-average Joe and get a basic understanding of whats going on. How you interpret that information maybe different from how the big media giants interpret it. Its the beauty of having a society of free speach and free thinking.

im not going further into this, this is a pub conversation to get into and difficult to do whilst working because it takes me so long to type a reply that i often forget where i finished and end up rereading the whole thing only to run out of time to reply! If you enjoy it mate, have fun :)

Happy here....have booked our holiday next summer independently, flying eJ and arranging accommodation with the owner. Had to transefer a €320 deposit to a Greek bank and was a bit nervous about getting all the details right, but have just had an email confirming it's arrived safely :) .

Home for three weeks next July/August....top floor sea view B) .
