It's almost the wicked humour associated with saying or doing one thing, and completely meaning the other, such as telling a rippling body builder he is a fat bastard. He knows, you know, he is not fat, and he knows you know he is in great shape, and calling him a fat bastard is actually complementing him, in an ironic way (though perhaps try other examples in which to experiment, as we don't want Arnie Swartz putting you in a head lock anytime soon ha ha ).
