To be fair I wasn't all that impressed with the excerpts he placed on his website. And a lot of the references in his columns are to things that happened in the 80's which people in their 20's might not get (apart from the fact that you need to know a lot about American culture as you said). I like Simmons, and I will continue to read his stuff .. But I don't think I'm willing to pay 20 euro (cheapest price I've found (shipping included)) for some rehashed columns.

I don't see a point in signing that petition. Gambling has been ruled not to fall completely under the freedom to provide services. If you want to change that, you shouldn't petition the EU. You should petition your national governments. Force them to adopt national legislation, or change the Treaties. Other than that, the member states have the right to regulate gambling themselves if they justify it in light of public policy.

That FIFA regulation has been used by numerous other FA's. So I fear there's not much FIFA will do.

The FA's reasoning is that there are only so many games before the EC qualifying games start, so Advocaat needs to have the team together as much as possible to implement his "system". So in that sense, there are no pointless games. To be fair, if wasn't an Everton supporter, I would have whole heartedly supported the FA decision. In the players' mind there's fuck all to play for in Estonia and nobody would want to go there anyway, but if your country asks you to play an international game you should do it.
