  1. some gamble by Conte. Replacing someone who "only" cost them 32m with someone who will cost Chelsea at least double that, but is not in the nearest twice as good. at the same time, he massively lowered the number they can now get for Costa as he now has to sell him. he must not care in the slightest about Abramovichs' money. prediction: before Christmas, Batshuayi will be starting in the lone striker role for Chelsea.
  2. actually quite interesting it's only the first time in this thread it's touched upon. http://www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2017/06/07/uncosted-the-brexit-black-hole-in-corbyn-and-may-s-manifesto
  3. Because citizens of Benelux and UK are mostly (scientifically) literate and live in a welfare state where, overall, they don't have to worry about their social and economic well-being. It's tough for religion to get a firm hold on people who are critical thinkers and who feel most of their needs are met in real life, rather than hoping they will be met in an after-life or in a spiritual world. Why do they choose Christianity? Christianity is a great one for people who feel oppressed, because it allows them to identify with the struggles Christ and the early Christians went through. A lot in Christianity is about submission (as opposed to the more aggressive Islam). Also, if you're gonna pick a religion, why not the biggest one? Maybe there is a bandwagon effect going on there. To be clear, I don't dismiss religion; it plays a valuable part in many (by my standards less advanced) societies and is definitely a bringer of hope.
  4. So which is it? Pay what we want , or just move him ASAP for the price that suits him? I think this will be a humiliating experience for Rom. IMO, any team would be mad to pay more than 60-65m for him. Everton won't let him go for anything less than 75?-80?. He'll stay at Everton for at least one more season and it will have been another summer of him saying he will go to a "big" club, with no realistic offers coming in.
  5. Excellent reply. Religion is important for people who are in a tough situation. To give them strenght to keep going, with the promise a better afterlife. To me, if religion is an important part of a society, it is an indication of a failure to set up the necessary structures that support and protect individuals and families. Concerning the creation of the universe, we don't know (yet?) - so I don't mind if people credit a god for making everything; as long as that doesn't mean we stop our scientific pursuit of what (really) happened.
  6. Tough one for our British friends. My only advice would be: no PM is better than a bad PM. ?
  7. I was at the game and was watching him closely even when he was not near the ball. I'm usually not his biggest fan but thought he moved well and was especially good at hold up play. He set up the first goal and hit the post with a good effort. Indeed, Batshuayi and Rom were replaced by Benteke and Mertens at half time. Benteke was awful.
  8. Speaking to the press after the friendly match against Czech Republic (in which he played quite well; paired with Batshuayi), he revealed his manager is in advanced talks with "a Champions League club" that is "capable of winning the Premier League multiple times". He added "I don't want to stay at my current level". Wouldn't say if it is ManU or Chelsea.
  9. excellent post. personally I was more annoyed by the douche that started the trident discussion.
  10. Are nuclear weapons that much of a hot topic in the UK this moronic audience had to keep pressing Corbyn whether or not he would kill millions of people?? Overall Corbyn handled himself better than May.
  11. I would rather have Rom than Lacazette. In the French league, Rom would have scored just as much for Lyon, if not more. Keep Rom this summer; focus on making sure Everton is competitive for CL next season; based on a successful 2017-20218 season, attract bigger names in summer 2018 and Rom will happily sign a new contract with one year remaining on his current deal.
  12. this is bad, but not catastrophic.. the world will not end because Trump has set in motion a procedure that will take the USA out of the Paris Agreement in 3 to 4 years. 1/ will he still be president in 3 to 4 years? 2/ his policy doesn't matter if industry doesn't follow; even US oil companies say they will stick to the Paris Accord. 3/ he has created tremendous awareness for Climate Change; with 99% of people/governements in agreement over the need to end/slow global wamring 4/ thanks to the swift response from Canada, Europe, China, the Paris Agreement still has legitimacy. 5/ Bush left Kyoto
  13. Conservative Party is big enough to have at least a few capable people? Even if you disagree with someone from a political point of view, you can still respect their intellectual capabilities. This Paris Agreement thing (where every other First World leader has, at the very least, expressed regret over Trumps decision) is another indication that she doesn't have what it takes to be PM. Events happen too quickly for her, she needs too much time to think and can therefor only express herself in meaningless, hollow ways.
  14. Wouldnt the best result for the Conservative Party be a small majority? Big enough to govern alone but small enough to undermine May and get a better party leader? Surely, if the Tory majority is smaller than they have now, this is on her and she has to go.
  15. Nigel Farage is a person of interest in FBI investigation into Trump and Russia (I don't think he necessarily minds being somewhat relevant again). https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/jun/01/nigel-farage-is-person-of-interest-in-fbi-investigation-into-trump-and-russia Maybe some day this thread will merge with the Brexit thread.
  16. this is not a parody: full story here: http://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/three-minutes-of-nothing-herald-reporter-reflects-on-pm-encounter/story-30363961-detail/story.html
  17. Been watching "Thirteen Reasons Why" on Netflix and glad I discovered this song on their soundtrack
  18. https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2017/05/the-art-of-negotiation/ This, by a former UK senior diplomat. We can only hope it's Davis who does the negotiating (who isn't much better, but at least seems an intelligent person). I think Keir Starmer is the one that could get the best deal for the UK and EU... don't think he'll be at the table though.
  19. Signed new contract with Napoli til 2020.
  20. true enough. this millennium has been relatively peaceful. http://www.datagraver.com/thumbs/1300x1300r/2016-12/terror20161220-i2.png
  21. these videos about what a disaster this European part of the trip was just keep coming.
