Pretty sure Houllier played Downing more centrally when Milner left with Young and the emerging Albrighton/Pires/Agbangawhore out wide. I have no evidence but I just remember him playing there!!! The majority of my mates are Villa 'fans' and him playing there just sticks out in my mind as they were raving how good he was!

Downing played cm in his time at villa - probably his most successful spell was in a central role. Personally I wouldn't want him as I have my doubts over his metal strength/confidence but if we signed him I certainly wouldn't oppose it. I think Moyes and his team will be the best to judge if he's worth pursuing.

I would have the Downing from his Villa days but there's no guarantee of that, I actually think he's a confidence player who's totally lost his bottle and the best move would be Boro and be the star man in the Mowbray rebuild job!

Arteta would make us better still, a lot better. He's top notch, that's why he's not coming back as Arse wouldn't dream of letting him go!

It's nonsense in the sense that I think he's not playing because he's having an affair with Moyes' daughter and they've fallen out!!! There's no substanance or evidence to that just pure speculation! He's not playing because it's taken longer than expected for him to recover from an injury sustained in the 2-0 defeat vs WBA - plain and simple. What myself and mark were discussing was that it was a 2-3week injury and then no time scale was put on it after that and the situation went quiet... (Obviously when he was banging Lauren Moyes!)
