It's because he's proven that he's likely to play every game by being the best left back in England - certainly at our club. By loaning Garbutt out having signed a long term deal gives us the best of both worlds. Why didn't Courtios sit on the bench rather than go on-loan to Atletico for 2 seasons?

Oviedo isn't necessarily ahead of him. The fact is that Baines is the best left back in England maybe the league - he should play every game. Baines is at an age where he may decline in the next couple of years and in Garbutt we have potentially the perfect successor. We just need Garbutt to get some essential experience and play every week which he is good enough to do. Oviedo is decent back-up and he adds the bonus of being quite versatile as he's comfortable on either wing. If Oviedo sticks about long enough then he'll probably be Garbutt's back-up too!

Has anyone ever read one of Haf's anecdotes of a player he once knew or had a drink with in his local in a Bill Kenwright voice? I strongly recommend it if you haven't. I'd even question if Haf actually is Bill Kenwright and is just seeking reassurance from this forum - clever if so!

It should be with only 2 senior centre backs in the squad. Man C struggled last season because they didn't have enough cover in the position - it's important to have 4 competent centre backs. With the quality of Jags and Stones I think we can afford to have Galloway OR Browning as an option if we sign someone of van Dijk's quality. Imagine getting a couple of injuries and going into the season with Galloway and Browning at the back - we'd get torn to pieces. I hope both become 1st teamers eventually but centre back is not a position to chance.

I'd say we have a reputation for developing good young players and contesting towards the top of the league bar the top 4 - we're very likeable. Chelsea have a reputation for spending big and winning things as a result - not as likeable maybe but a hell of a lot more successful in the modern game.
