I personally thought Davies was okay at best - Gana would have done better in my opinion. The big difference for me today was the quality in the full-back areas. With Coleman AND Baines we are significantly better.

This may sound ridiculous but international squads shouldn’t necessarily just be the best 23 players. Sometimes ‘lesser’ players just fit into a role within the group. With regards to striking options... Kane is a no brainer, Vardy too but after that you’ve got other youngsters in Rashford, Abraham and Solanke etc. who aren’t playing, then more experience in Welbeck and Sturridge but big fitness question marks, then more senior players like Defoe, Walcott and untried players like Wilson and Murray. Looking at our (England’s) striking options, DCL isn’t too far down the pecking order so may be worth a run-out in the friendlies.

Allardyce only came here for the money. We only need/want him short term. He’ll be gone by May and hopefully long forgotten. Allardyce wouldn’t sign the 6month contract knowing there was more money to squeeze out of us. The 12 months we’d have to pay off is a drop in the ocean when weighed up against the Premier League millions. It’s been the thing to do this season... Allardyce to us. Lambert to Stoke. Moyes to West Ham (although this is the one that probably has some longevity). Pardew to WBA. Hodgson to Palace. All appointments based purely on safety first regarding the prize money rather than ‘building a project’. All have proved massively underwhelming!

BUT Fonseca, although a risk, could be an incredible coup. Either will do me just fine.

If Silva’s our man - that’s great, get rid of Sam and build now but I’ve got a feeling that we really want Fonseca and will have to wait until the summer to make it happen. He’s a component who, when used correctly, makes us a better team. Last season, in a midfield with Schneiderlin (remember him?!), Davies and Barkley he was able to do his job effectively - he’s not a player who will stand out to most as he’s not going to score 10+ goals a season or assist many either. This season has been much harder but we’ve now found that alongside Davies and Rooney, he can be effective again. I’m aware of stats but judge purely on what I see - I go to or watch every game and watch all BT/Sky games involving other teams - in my opinion, he’s an essential component to EFC progressing. Kante gets all the plaudits as has Makelle previously but watch Kante in a midfield alongside Bakayoko - it doesn’t work! I was watching Ray Parlour talk about how Wenger used players like Viera, Petit and Gilberto, etc and he was says how they need to work like pistons - when one presses, the other drops in behind and vice versa - I’d say, for the most part, Gana is doing his job - maybe we just haven’t found (or stuck with) the right partner for him yet.
