Republic of Ireland aren't able to. They have their own Olympic Committee: http://www.olympicsport.ie They would have played in Olympics if the ROI U21 team had qualified through the European U21 Championship, unfortunately they didn't. It would have been nice to see Duffy / Coleman in the Olympics. Having said that, I think Northern Ireland players can play for Ireland because of the Good Friday agreement.

Possibly a bad example Matt, he was a Liverpool fan. Ian C made an interesting point earlier... fans are irked when players 'show ambition' whilst criticising the board members for not showing any. I don't think it's the case that Heitinga and Fellaini are criticising the club, it's that only small samples of what they say are translated and made into sensationalist news articles. You could ask any player in the squad if they want to win trophies and play in the Champions League, and I'd wager the answer would be "yes" to both.

Can he make the McAlaney position his own? A one year deal doesn't sound like the club are confident about him though. In contrast.. Barkley was offered a three year (two and a half year) contract, the maximum allowed for the age group.
